The IB program is committed to guide students to realize about the\nimportance of being sustainable, through personal projects, units of inquiry\nand global context. Recycle, reduce and reuse are not only as simple words to\naddress students, but also meaningful actions to help build a better future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The question is how sustainable is your school? How do you address this issue? You can help and become more sustainable in many ways. IB Schools have been implemented different strategies, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/colegiocelta.com.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/logo_ods-1024x561.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12753\" width=\"424\" height=\"232\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hands-on experience<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSustainable\nprojects provide students with real-life, authentic learning experiences\nenabling them to transfer newly acquired skills to everyday life. They are also\nthe perfect service learning tools helping both students and teachers alike to\nlink knowledge, skills, inquiry and action. This is key in building a better\nfuture for our global community,\u201d says Ratko Johan, a Middle Years Programme\n(MYP) teacher at Matija Gubec International School, Zagreb, Croatia, who gave a\ntalk about sustainable schools at the IB Global Conference in Vienna in\nOctober.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Zero waste Classroom<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe students came up with the idea to have reusable silverware, plates, cups and water bottles in the classroom. One of our chores is washing these dishes throughout the week. Students decided to use cloth napkins when eating, and we have cloth hand towels at the sinks and cloth rags for spills. The students use every piece of paper on both sides before it goes into the recycle bin\u201d, says Kim Johnson and Rae Baerlocher, fifth-grade teachers at Franklin Elementary School in Missoula, USA, which is in its candidacy phase to offer the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nclass has five different ways to sort trash, including composting. Johnson has\npartnered with preciousplasticmissoula.com, which collects various plastics and\nmelts them down to mould into building materials. The children are then able to\nsee what the plastic has become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/colegiocelta.com.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/cropped-Color-logo-with-background-1024x461.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12754\" width=\"398\" height=\"179\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nmany schools, these strategies have worked out by creating a direct link with a\nUnit of Inquiry (PYP) or a global context, or personal Project (MYP). Students\ncan share their ideas on how would be a good way to recycle items or material\nused in class; by reducing, reusing and recycling paper, plastic by creating\nthings that can be used in our daily lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Providing\nthis type of experiences to students, will help them understand the importance\nof sustainability, therefore it could be share with their family and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Sharing ideas<\/strong><\/li><li><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHATCH\n(Hub for Action Toward Climate Health) is a set of editable documents\n(shareable Google Docs) where a school can share and celebrate a project or ask\nfor help and input. The idea is to make all the resources free and open, and\nbuild our competence through interaction with each other. This is also how\necosystems evolve and adapt, so the hub is really a form of bio-mimicry\u201d, says\nKatharine Burke, an MYP teacher at Skagerak International School, Sandefjord,\nNorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/colegiocelta.com.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_0318-1024x438.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12755\" width=\"346\" height=\"148\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Keeping\nin touch among IB teachers allow to share experiences and may help to improve\ndifferent ideas than have been implemented successfully.
