By Vivian Ocampo
On February 26th and 27th of this year, in the city of Cadereyta de Montes, the state qualifier of the «NACIONALES CONADE 2022» took place, games where Celtic School was represented in the individual sports modality in the discipline of chess by our student Santiago Rodriguez Castelltort, from Middle School, who demonstrated his excellent level, despite being his first participation in a classical tournament, obtaining 5th place in the category 13-14 years with 4 points out of 6 possible of the event, being only half a point away from qualifying to the regional stage.
Undoubtedly, it was a tournament that required effort, dedication and discipline from our worthy representative, who came to play up to 3 hours some of his most important matches, as well as the incomparable support of his family and coach who were by him every step of the way in this competition.
Congratulations, Santiago!
Likewise, on March 13, in the municipality of Los Cues, Querétaro, the first “Hacienda Los Cuess Chess Tournament” was held in its rapid chess mode, in a 5-round Swiss system, where our school was worthily represented by Santiago and Leonardo Rodríguez Castelltort, Andrés González Silva, Ricardo Escobar López, Ulises Gutiérrez Rodríguez and, our youngest, 1st grade Elementary student, Iker Niembro Cortés.
By itself, the tournament was, for many of our players, the first time they faced this type of challenges, specially, taking into account the two years of pandemic that kept Celtic School away from competitions; however, our students demonstrated what their perseverance, resilience and preparation could do.
Our students competed in 2 different categories, the Elementary category, in which Leonardo Rodríguez Castelltort won a medal placing 4th place, affected by the time breaker systems, despite having lost against who would win the first place in his category. And, in this same category, Iker Niembro Cortés achieved 2 out of the 5 points contended.
In the Middle/High school category, Ricardo Escobar and Ulises Gutiérrez achieved 2 of the 5 contended points, Andrés González 3 of 5 puntos points and, Santiago Rodríguez Castelltort again marveled everybody by being crowned as an Absolute Champion in this category, by winning undefeated the 5 played matches, defeating his opponents overwhelmingly on the chess board.
Congratulations for our Chess Boars!!! and may the successes continue.
