Freedom… #MyFreedomDay
Claudia Edith Molleda Ortega | Career-related Programme Coordinator
All along these days, we’ve talked a lot about freedom from several points of view, one that is very worrying is one that has to do with the slavery forms that we see nowadays, sexual slavery, labor, slavery produced by war, etc. All those we call “modern slavery.”
Let’s start by defining freedom, quoting Real Academia Española, freedom is:
1. n. the natural faculty of man to act in one way or another, or not to act; so he is responsible for his actions.
2. n. state or condition of that who is not a slave.
Under this perspective and that of the importance of fighting against modern slavery, Atlanta International School has promoted since 2017, along with CNN channel, a space for students to understand and raise their voice against the lack of freedom, but not only that, but to contribute to eradicate it, this space #MyFreedomDay. “Through a Facebook group called International Students Against Human Trafficking, 80 schools from all around the world have joined to raise awareness about this blooming problem.” (IB,2017)
Celtic International School has joined again, for the third consecutive year, to this movement through works students do in their History and Ethics classes, some of these works will be available online, we will send them to you for you to know the reflections.
Here is an excerpt of the IB Newsletter that talks about how this event came out:
“The students are learning to take responsibility for their communities and they are informing people and communicating their knowledge within their schools and cities, and connecting this with other children around the world.”
IB Diploma Programme (DP) student and AISAHT main leader Charlotte Jones, says: “Awareness is such a fundamental part of progressing towards a slavery free world. #MyFreedomDay offers a global platform for students to spread their anti-trafficking efforts”.
“I’m eager to seeing how children from all over the world are fighting for this cause and the impact they will create from our Global Day of Freedom fighting. It excites me that this action is now being recognized globally. It feels like we are facing the beginning of the end for modern-day slavery.”
