The ocean: life and livelihood
June 8th. World Oceans Day
This is the theme of World Oceans Day 2021, a year in which we start a decade of challenges to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 14: “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources”.
Proof of this is that the ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, harbors most of the earth’s biodiversity and is the main source of protein for more than one billion people around the world. In addition, the ocean is key to our economy, since it is estimated that, by 2030, there will be around 40 million workers in the entire ocean-related sector.
With 90% of large fish populations depleted and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. To protect and preserve the ocean and all that it supports, we must create a new balance, rooted in a true understanding of the ocean and how humanity relates to it. We must build a connection to the ocean that is inclusive and innovative.
The ocean covers more than 70% of the planet. It is our source of life and the sustenance of humanity and of all other organisms on earth.
